Indian railways—world’s second largest rail network under a single management, has been contributing to the development of the country’s industrial and economic landscape for over 150 years. Of the two main segments of the Indian railways— freight and passenger, the freight segment accounts for roughly two-thirds of revenues.

Amongst the many expansion plans or projects in the Indian rail sector, a few have been highlighted below that offer high potential for the involvement of the private sector:

  • There has been an impressive growth in container traffic of over 14 percent per annum during the past five years. The growth in external trade combined with the shift of bulk cargo towards containerized cargo has opened new opportunities in the rail freight sector. CONCOR’s monopoly in container movement over rail has now been demolished and licenses are being awarded to private sector operators for the same.

  • Mumbai-Delhi and Mumbai-Howrah routes have very high capacity utilization as they connect the northern hinterland to the gateway ports. Dedicated freight corridors are proposed in the first phase between Delhi-Mumbai (1,340 Kms) and Delhi-Howrah (1,450 Kms) routes and the investment in the Delhi Mumbai corridor is expected to be more than Rs. 22,000 crore.

  • 'Indian ports' connectivity to the hinterland has been the main cause for the poor throughput at these ports. Several projects connecting key ports to the hinterland by rail are under conceptualization or implementation—most of these being in the PPP mode.

Railways form the backbone of the Indian economy and the massive development plans of the Government to provide strategic rail communication links to ports, construction of mega-bridges for improving communication to the hinterland and development of multi-modal transport corridors has given huge opportunity in this sector.  Feedback undertakes feasibility studies, scheme designs and detailed design for all types of railway structures that are constructible in a railway environment.

Our experience in handling mega infrastructure projects helps us in venturing into Project Management Consultancy and construction supervisions for railway line expansion, gauge conversions, laying of new lines, stations, bridges & structures besides Economic Impact Assessment studies.
