In comparison, Hyderabad is about to get a 71-km metro without the central or state government paying a rupee. Instead, the Andhra Pradesh government will receive Rs 1,240 crore (calculated at present value) by simply giving the concession to a private consortium.

Date: January 22, 2008 Synopsis: Railways minister Lalu Prasad may give a major freight push in this year’s Rail Budget. After getting the dream freight corridor project cleared by the Cabinet, Mr. Prasad is likely to announce special commodity-specific freight corridors in his Budget. The new corridors are proposed to act not only as feeders to the main freight corridor but would also supplement high revenue earnings routes with a dedicated service.
